A Helping Hand Over Father’s Day

Since my folks went out of town over the Father’s Day weekend (which was a first for them in many a years) I spent the weekend helping a friend, Roger, who I met when we both worked at a car repair service center back in the 80′s. So we have known each other long and have always been there to help each when we could. So when he emailed me last week asking me to help him at a local Trade Show so that he can try and drum up some business for his mail and packaging businesses that he opened only a few years ago, right before the economy started taking a major dive.

Trade shows are a great way to promote your company and a great place to do some major networking at the same time. He went and bought a ton of stuff for his booth/spot, like some good quality trade show flooring for starters. It is definitely not something that one person should even try and do by themselves, it would actually have been nice to have a few more helping hands with some strong backs to help as well, I was working up a sweat there at the end. There was a logo canopy, some good looking logo mats and a good sized roll of some trade show carpet that he had his company’s name printed on it, which came out pretty good I might say.

Anyway it seems to have been a success. There were only a handful of the give-a-ways left on the table. He ran out of business cards by mid-day, in which I kept razzing him about, he really should have brought more as back up, but I was just the free help there to lend a hand, in which I did a pretty good job I have to say. I’m glad that is was a success and I wish him all the luck in the world and I’ll be sure to send as many people as I can to him that need that type of mail and packaging service.

A Gift That Keeps On Giving

I know plenty of folks that are giving Direct TV as presents to loved ones that can’t afford the luxury of paying for good TV reception and all the channels and all the other goodies that go along with having a pay TV subscription. Such is the case with my Great Aunt Virginia and Great Uncle Dave, who retired oh so very long ago and are feeling the crunch of today’s screwed up economy while trying to live on a fixed income. Each year, for their wedding anniversery we all pool our resources together and renew their Satellite TV subscription for yet another year, which works out right nice for all involved.

Before pay TV came around we would all pitch in and pay either their phone bill, electric bill or insurance for a full year, this check was always appreciated all year long and they are always so very happy with the channels that they can receive with Direct TV. My uncle gets plenty of sports channels and my aunt can watch all the numerous channels that they have with the female population in mind. She has several cooking shows that she looks forward to watching during the day and tons of other good shows that she would never be able to enjoy if they didn’t have the Direct TV package that we gladly purchase for them each year. It’s the gift that just keeps on giving.

McDonald’s Is In The News Along With Subway

Was flipped stations earlier this evening and stumbled onto a show about McDonalds. One of the things that they were talking about was that China is now home to over 200 McDonald restaurants and that they 29 drive throughs. But apparently the chinese are not grasping the drive through concept, but that isn’t going to stop them from building more, I can tell you that.

I also learned that Subway just passed McDonalds for the first time in restaurant chains, but McDonalds is still selling more than anyone, anywhere.

The Wholesale Game

The variety of Wholesale Suppliers that are available for folks to purchase from these days. I have several friends that purchase Wholesale Products online and then take them to the various local flea market on the weekends. Some do well and some don’t, it seems that it is a major guessing game as to what products are going to be a hit each time you load up and do a market. What was hot and moving quickly last week, might not be worth a second glance the following week, hit or miss as they say. Different markets target different types of merchandise and clientele as well.

I took a gander at a few sites earlier today that target Wholesalers, there is a lot to take in. I wouldn’t want to have to make the decision on what to buy in order to make a buck or two, but there are plenty folks out there that are trying their darnedest to survive in these horrific economic times that are government has gotten us into. It’s all about the money and it takes money to make money, right.

Come spring I’m heading out to a few of the local flea markets, I enjoy going to some of them through out the year. Some more than others. I try and stay away from ones that are full of baby products and clothes and Beanie Babies. There are good people to be found going on there folks, like I said I know many vendors that are trying to make a living doing this laborious task, week after week, month after month, year after year, rain or shine, heck it can be snowing and you would find at least a handful of people showing up looking for the “Bargain of The Day”

Logo Land

Back in the 90′s I used to work for Nationwide Insurance. When I first started working there their logo used to be well known eagle’s head in blue on a white background.

Years later when I left Nationwide, after they had spent millions upon millions of dollars with a Logo Design Company that came up with the following empty blue box that had us rolling with laughter and as well as bit of disgust and contempt for all that money being used and coming up with a new logo that consists of 4 blue lines. It was our opinion that the old logo was just fine and the time and money spent to come up with the new one could have put to better use, especially since many of us were being passed up for promotions, raises, bonuses and benefits were starting to be phased out.

Having a logo is very important, but it just seemed to use that if it wasn’t broken, why spend the time and money to try and fix it! All the waste that came out of that logo change, anything that had the eagle on it was to be destroyed, there was tons of that type of stuff around in just our office, much less all the other offices, all across the country that was going through the same nonsense.
