Rags to Riches = Nouveau Riche

Do you remember the show called “Queen for a Day” which was on in the 40′s, 50′s and the 60′s. This show has been called a forerunner of “reality television” and started out on the Radio in 1945. Now that show was a classic case of Nouveau Riche which is defined as a person who is newly rich.

The tearjerking factor was always part of the show’s appeal and I remember thinking how horrible it must be to have to go on the TV and tell the world how bad off you are, along with 3 other women with their own sob stories and hope that they are picked out of the group for being the worst off, to win the opportunity of being a Queen for a day. The winner was always given a beautiful boquet of a dozen long stem red roses, and then she wore a red velvet cape along with a crown that placed on her head before heading down the runway with her face always streaked with tears of joy at being able to then have a fully paid for night on the town with their husband or other escort, along with other fabulous prizes that were selected to help her make her life better.

I always felt so sorry for these woman and I didn’t watch the show very often as it would put me into a depressed state of mind for the rest of the day/evening.

Super Hero Cufflinks For Dad

Considering that my father is a Super Hero fan from way back I think that he will be thrilled with the cufflinks that I have found to give to him for Father’s Day this year. I haven’t bought dad cufflinks in many moons, I have tried to find other types of things to give to him rather than the typical cufflink, tie, and slipper gifts that most fathers end up receiving on the numerous gift giving opportunities that come to us all year round.

Check out these wonderful Super Hero cufflinks that I found at Redenvelope.com this afternoon. I can’t make up my mind if I should get the Superman ones or the Batman ones so I figured what the heck I’ll get them both, he is certainly worth it.

The Giving of Chocolates

My mother has always been easy to buy for come all the various holidays that come around each year that gift giving is typically very essential, such as her Birthday, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and of course my parent’s wedding anniversary. She could receive nothing but chocolates all year long and be a happy camper. My father on the other hand isn’t such an easy one to buy for.

This man has worked hard all his life to get what he wants and there isn’t much that he already gotten for himself. No neck ties or slippers for this guy, so gift cards work well for him. And sometimes chocolates put a smile on his face as well, but he knows that all he needs to do to get his chocolate fix taken care of is to go ask my mother to dig into her always loaded personal chocolate stash in the bedroom.

For their next anniversary I’m thinking about buying them a long weekend, not too far away, for some fun in the sun and a few rounds of golf. That is something that they both will totally enjoy at their convenience, and at my expense. Maybe I can talk a few of my brothers and sisters into going in with me on that one. For now I guess I better get out of here and get my mother her favorite box of chocolates and take them over to her and enjoy a home cooked meal with them both for Valentine’s Day. Since I don’t have a “sweetheart” right now to spend the evening with.

Stainless Steel Sinks

I’ve been put in charge of looking at stainless steel sinks this weekend that would look good in my mother’s home as well as being affordable for her to purchase on her limited monthly Social Security check. Since our father passed away my brothers and sisters have had to step up to the plate and help our mother out as best as we can with things just like this. None of us really mind, it is the least we can do considering all that our mother has done for us all of our lives.

BEACH CONDO

Thanks for the guest post by Jonathan Curtis

We ended up getting good clear internet deals and they are going to be installing it into our new vacation home next week. We have always wanted a beach house and have just gotten to the point where we are going to be able to afford one. My husband and I both love the beach. I wish that we had been able to afford one sooner, but now is a great time because our kids are becoming teenagers and already don’t want to spend their extra time with Mom and Dad. Anything that we can do to get them to “hang” with us is worth it. We have already gotten them to agree to spend the summer at the condo. I am going to stay for the majority of the summer and my husband is going to come every weekend. The kids are going to be allowed to invite a friend or two. The good thing is that it is only about two hours from our house, so it is a very quick and easy drive there. I just can’t wait!
