A good buddy of mine took on the task of writing a book and he called me up the other evening and asked if he could come over, that he had something to give me. He showed up at my door with a six pack and an autographed copy of his newly published book entitled “Deer Hunting with Jesus” – Dispatches from America’s class war - ”A raging, hilarious, and profane love song to the great American redneck.” by my good friend himself – Joe Bageant.

We spent a pleasant evening drinking his beer, talking about his book and rehashing the good old days until 1:30 that morning. It was reall good seeing my old friend and am so tickled that he took the time to come over to hand deliver his book that I can’t wait to start reading.

Seems that the family is up in arms over the up and coming Christmas holidays that are fast approaching us. Faster than I can to think. These pats few years have really taken it’s toll on everyone, there isn’t a single soul that I know that hasn’t been struggling, struggling hard due to the economy in such turmoil, and the news isn’t all that promising that things will change any time soon.

You see the family has been wanting to check into some travel books and online sites that will assist with planning a family get a way during the long holiday breaks that most of us get to enjoy. The kids in the family have really been looking forward to spending time with relatives that they don’t get to see very often. They have all been pushing to go some where that they can enjoy all of the numerous winter sports that are available these days. The big one is snowmobiling and snow boarding, which has become so popular the people much younger than me, I can tell you that.

The older folks in the family are all about going somewhere nice and warm to get as far away as they can from the harsh winter weather that we always experience during those winter months. As they say “you can’t please everyone” but if no one can afford this family event it doesn’t look like any of us will be going anywhere any time soon, sigh….

I do so enjoy the reading of a good book, I have always enjoyed reading as long as I can remember and I enjoy the company of others that still enjoy picking up a good book instead of turning on the television set. I often find myself reading several books at a time, depending on what type of mood I am in at that time, almost the same as switching the channels on a television. Not that I have anything against watching the television, but I don’t have an abundance of these sets placed all about my living quarters, as so many of us do these days. Actually I only own one and that is in the living room, a pretty nice one and I subscribe to a satellite company that gives me access to hundreds of channels, most of them I wouldn’t want to view no matter how bored I might become.

Losing power is the only thing that I am worried about over the weekend, without power the only thing to do is to sleep and I can only do so much of that. Well I guess I could use one of the many flashlights that I have on hand around and read, but these old eyes can only take so much of that these days. What I’d like to do is to spend the weekend watching TV and surfing the Internet.

I’ve been meaning to look for a good Cosmetic Dentist, but to be honest I keep putting it off. I have never been a fan of any type of dentist, even a Cosmetic Dentist which I’m sure is why I keep putting it off. I also would like to start looking and comparing cell phone providers. My current contract is going to end in a couple of months and I am totally ready to switch to another one. I’m so tired of all the dropped calls and the weak signals that seem to happen at the worse opportunity, even though all of the commercial for my current provider are all about how wonderful and strong their signals are all over. I wonder if they have ever heard of false advertising.

So, as long as I have power I will weather the storm just fine, if not, well we will see what it brings when it happens.

Today’s email contained the slang word of the day of feel-goodery. I can honestly say that I don’t think that I have never heard of this word, much less used it, maybe a variation of it some time, some where, some place but not that I can remember. According to the Online Slang Word of the Day Dictionary the definition of feel-goodery is:

• a place that offers little of substance, instead focusing on making people feel good about themselves.

It’s a good thing that I didn’t make a promise of using each word of the day at least once a day like so many people do with their “words of the day” I do believe that I would be stumped on this one.

This word really reminds me of Tom-Foolery, remember that one? I looked it up and was surprised to find it to be all one word - Tomfooleries: mischiefous tricks, very similar to “shenanigans”. Live and learn!

From what I hearing the amount of people taking advantage of all the Online Degree Programs that are being offered more and more these days for people that for what ever reason choose not to attend the regular/standard class room classes that most of us attended back in our formal education days.

My good friend Skip, I just recently found out, has always wanted to be a 3rd grade teacher, not 2nd grade or 4th grade, it has to be 3rd grade, for reasons that he is keeping to himself at this point. And now that his kids are grown and out of the house and he and his wife split up, he is all about what HE wants and what He needs, and I think He is crazy! No not really, well maybe just a tad, it’s just that I never knew that he had always wanted to be a teacher. I know he is good with kids, but teaching them every day, day in and day out, week after week, month after month, ugh it makes my head hurt just thinking about be stuck in a classroom with 20 or 30 loud, wild and crazy 8, 9 and 10 year old kids! He really must be committed to this dream in order to be seriously talking about and checking out the online degree programs in education with The University of Phoenix which is a very well known school that offers accredited online and campus programs in education as well as numerous other programs as well.

I’m assuming that he has the money all ready saved up to take these courses, if not there is ample assistance for today’s students to aid in the cost involved in obtaining these degrees. But I’ll send him a few links that I have come up with, like the one http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ which will take him to a Free Application For Federal Student Aid, ’tis the least I can do for the guy at this point.
