The Trail of Tears Story
Got a letter from a friend of mine who lives out around Tennessee way and he’s been on a thing about Indians of late, anyway, here’s what he wrote me…
“Somehow when I was in school and having to learn about U. S. history, we must have skipped lightly over the parts where the “new Americans” warred with the Native Americans Indians and forced them out of their homelands.
It wasn’t until I was an adult and began my own interest in all things Native American Indian that I learned what terrible things the white man did to our brown brothers. General Andrew Jackson was particularly brutal to the Indians, although I’m sure in his own mind he helped overcome his sins and soothe his guilt by kidnapping a young Indian from each raid and sending “the lucky one” home to his farm in Tennessee for his poor wife, Rachel, to raise.
Then there is the whole Trail of Tears story. I drive across the trail several times each week and am always aware of the terrible event and suffering so many years ago of all those Indian souls on the very ground underneath me. I’ll be learning more about that and sharing it with you as I go.
